BAND BIO

A BRIEF HISTORY
THE MUSIC

Riddlebreak started out in past drummer Tony Duarte's garage back in early 2010, but with only a hand full of shows and some member changes the band only really started taking off in June 2011. The only original members left were Roushan van Niekerk and Gareth Reed, who then welcomed the new members Jade Osner, Niel Kruger, and Gordon Bosma. Gareth and Gordon were friends from college, and Gordon used to attend many of the 'old Riddlebreak's' shows; so it was only fitting that he took the mantle as drummer after Tony left. When original vocalist and guitarist Russell Peach left, the band was stuck in purgatory for a few months until Roushan and Gareth met Jade at a metal show: "He was the only other guy there besides us headbanging his face off, so I asked him if he wanted to audition" - Gareth. Niel, also a friend from college, filled in on lead and backup vocals.

For a time, this line up lasted, but sadly it was not destined to remain this way. Niel left to pursue a solo career, and after goodbyes were said, Riddlebreak was once again finding itself lacking a lead guitarist and backup vocalist. On the side, Gareth used to scream for thrash metal band Mizera, and it was there where he not only learnt to refine his voice so he could support Jade in Riddlebreak; But he also met Julian Vosloo who filled in on bass for Mizera a couple of times. The two befriended eachother, and it turned out that Julian was actually an amazing lead guitarist, so he joined Riddlebreak in early 2012; completing the line up once and for all!

Riddlebreak is an alternative/progressive five piece metal band based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Stylistically, their music meshes hook-laden choruses with progressive, alt-rock and metal elements. Drawing inspiration both from 90s alternative and contemporary artists alike, Riddlebreak has taken on the somewhat audacious task of creating their own genre by way of an alternative/prog-metal hybrid. Their music speaks out against injustice and questions the status quo while still keeping the curiosity and playfulness that is Riddlebreak. Traversing the sonic sphere from the melodic to the dissonant, Riddlebreak is difficult to pigeonhole and impossible to ignore!

THE MISSION

We are both the vengeful spirit fighting for a place in the new world, and the tranquil entity searching the stars for meaning. Unpredictable and thought provoking, whether you want to let loose the beast within, or saturate your inner philosopher; Riddlebreak aims to please whatever dualities you may possess.

Music created us, and music defines us, all else takes a back seat. We do not claim to have all the answers, we are simply seekers just like you. Together we hope to awaken our third eye, and find our place under the same sky.
